Ok first of all I’d like to congratulate Vishwanatan Anand for winning the world title! I know that now that his life long ambitions are fufilled. He won the championship and I congrtulated him on my blog. Serously I think he showed the most guts and fighting spirit. Plus he plays a Semi-Slav against the Queen’s Gambit so he is already so much cooler than all of the others competitors that it is sick…
Now to more pressing matters. I haven’t gone over all of the games, but what I have seen of the world championship seems to be lack of a fighting spirit by most of the competitors. I mean Kramnik accpeted a draw at move 14!? I understand that these guys are the best of the best but they seemed to be playing more not to lose than to win. It ridiculous that they can call it a draw whenever they want.
World championship boxers don’t want to lose to each other, but they don’t fight for a draw. They fight to win! I understand that this was a tournament and it is different than just a match between two players so strategies will be different, but come on, there were only 19 wins in 98 games! 79 games ended in a draw or 80.6% of the games.
But what is to be done? After all Rybka won a game earlier in the year where it was booked up to move 40! It’s computer opponent (Shredder) wasn’t booked up as far and had to start “thinking” for itself much earlier. Hisbestfriend posted about it here. With opening theory this out of control it’s no wonder alot of these guys don’t seem to take too many chances. All of the competitors are the best at figuring out tactics and so that would discourage wild play, but it just seemed a bit too passive to me.
That plus the fact that checkers has been solved (again thanks to hisbestfriend) leads me to believe that ches will be solved in the next 1-2 years. The public interest in chess has already waned once Deeper Blue defeated Garry Kasparov, and Kramnik lost to Deep Junior Fritz. Kramnik missing the mate in one highlighted the problem with such matches, computers don’t get tired and don’t have human failings. I fear that once chess is “solved” that will spell the end of world championship chess.
Why does this matter to me? Well apart from being a hack of a player who enjoys chess immensely I am also a fan. Since my early involvement in chess there has been no real undisputed champion. When Kasparov left FIDE to form the PCA it kind of screwed things up. Karpov was the champ again but by 1997 it was pretty clear that FIDE had lost its way and Karpov was well past his prime. FIDE was running some kind of super tournament to determine the champion every year, the idea was ridiculous.
So what to do?
I believe Kramnik gets to play Vishy for the title next year (I’ll check on this later) If and when this happens I think FIDE should go back to zonals and candidate matches. It should be a three year cycle. That would ensure that the candiates have had sustained superior performance over a period of time. Candiate matches should be a bit more lively and decisive, and a lot less likely to result in numerous draws.
A lot of the things I’ve read and heard about the championship matches in the old days was the excitement that candidate matches would generate. I mean these guys would prepare for an opponent ahead of time, this round robin thing doesn’t do much for the excitement of the games. I am also concerned because if World class championship chess dies then what will become of the USCF? and local tourneys? Would they be far behind if chess interest were to plumment around the world?
I don’t mean to sound so desperate, and I know that FIDE is recovering from their poor relationship with Kasparov, but they have an opportunity to get the world excited about chess agin, and I hope they take advantage of it before these damned machines become our overseers for good!
I’m just kidding about the machines becoming our overseers. Now I have to go there is much programming on the idiot box that I feel complelled to watch…MUST….. WATCH…… TV!
Well, ummm, weren’t there 56 games played in this tournament?
Hmmm…
8 players each playing 14 games right?
Each player plays the other players 2 times.
7 opponents played twice is 14.
8 x 14 = 112 so I’m wrong anyway.
Am I doing this right?
Hold on.
I checked the crosstables at
http://www.chessmexico.com/es/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=172&Itemid=162
So that should be 19 wins out of 112 games. So 83% of the games ended in draws.
Wellll, 8 players but they play each other so only 4 games per round times 14…
Okay, I’ll admit it, I was a Nuc too…but a very careful one.
DOH!
112 pairings but since it takes two to make a game there are only 56 distinct games!
See I am a Nuc. For the uninformed out there nucs have a reputation of brain farting on simple stuff from time to time. Like I just did
Well that changes things a bit…
Well 19 out of 56 isn’t as bad. But I still think that a draw after 14 moves is crap!
34% of the games were decisive. I think its still too low. 66% ended in draws.
Should high level chess look like this? Apparently so because not too many people seem concerned.
now you see why I refuse to allow the heinous evil inherant in the idiot box into my home, the machines have no hold over me.
I’d write more, but I’ve got to get to my online games
I’m with you. I much prefer the old interzonal, and candidates match formats. I guess they think these crazy formats draw more sponsorships, but it just seems like a crapshoot.
I hate to break it to you guys, but chess is dead. Fischer was right. Nakumura was right. Karpov was right. They all said this. After climbing to 2000-2400 chess strength in tactics and driving myself crazy to reach those heights – so much so that I can never found a person to give me a challenge for fun – I quit the game forever. I learned a lot, too. But, I can tell you that after seeing my own White and Black repertoire evolve into a solid one, I just felt like I was playing by rote. I mean, once you get a repertoire and strengthen your tactics to an insane level, then who can play you other than true professional players? Chess to be became an addiction. All the great tactical plays have been made. Combinations once thought beautiful melt away into being remedial by today’s theoretical views. Lasker was an artist. Fischer an artist. Morphy an artist. Those days are over! The strongest player today isn’t even human. It is Hydra! Eventually, you will see computers play chess games far quicker and more powerfully than any human is capable. What is chess? TACTICS! Any dork who learns the true way can open up a tactics manual and solve 100 puzzles a day over a six month period and turn into a tactical monster. 20 a day will get you past 1500. Chess is tactics. But, why did I ever start playing chess? I can’t tell you. I just know that chess became an addiction. There is more to life than conquering someone’s ego. I’ve never met a game like chess. Chess tears men down. There’s always a person to feel inferior. There’s always the winner, who feels proud, boastful, but tries to hide it. It’s a war. It’s not a game for nice people. After the Lord Jesus came into my life, I learned that chess was something I needed to give up. After climbing to a few points from wizard (2500 because everything after that is a novelty and it’s all you) I can tell you that I discovered along the way that if you can’t play chess for art’s sake, don’t play it. I learned quick why Fischer went crazy. I learned quick why Morphy went crazy. I learned that there are more things in life worth living for. I feel sorry for people like Morphy and Fischer. What else is there in life other than chess? Jesus. Chess is dead. How much differently will someone play the Scott? How much differently will someone play the Queen’s Gambit? How much? Can you tell us something new about the Pirc Defense? I can’t. Tell us about the Austrian Attack. What’s new? Fischer already showed it’s power and mystique. Bisguier felt the brunt of his creative endeavor. Chess is dead. Let’s get into something else now. The chess of the 1800s isn’t the chess of today. Today’s chess is lame. ROTE! All rote! Lines! Lines! Lines! Hit on the f7 square! Build the pressure! Watch it crumble like we’ve already seen that palace crumble a billion times. Computers have analyzed it! I analyzed it! What’s new? It’s sad and true. I hope someone out there will read this and understand. Chess destroys the MUST WIN guy! No one ever really wins in chess, because the game itself has conquered you! I hope no one ends up like I did. Being a chess hustler on the street in San Diego. Homeless. Doesn’t matter how many chess games you win. It matters how you win at another game. It’s called LIFE. God Bless!
There’s always Seirawan Chess
It’s the future, baby.
Even if chess is dead, there are so many other alive games like Go or even newer games like Connect6.
If amature chess destroyed your life, I’d hate to see what varsity football would’ve done to you. So many kids never make it to the pros in both sports. So many wish to be. But that doesn’t stop us. Tanya Harding lost it on Karigen, but that doesn’t mean ice skating is bad. And all those players who say chess is dead, they are already, or will be…and all of that knowledge with them. Computers, well, they are just training tools much the way a tredmill is to a track star. But we don’t pin the tredmills speed against a runner, that it rediculous. So why pin our chess training computer calculating tools against ourselves? Drawing is a part of chess. It happens when players are equally matched toward a particular level. On all levels, all the time. Go ahead and pin your strongest computer against a man for twenty matches, we can be sure it will show man and Fischer, ooh…there is so much more to learn.
